West Cornwall is the perfect base to visit the Isles of Scilly

Take advantage of our Short Break Special Offers as part of a trip to Scilly.

The Isles of Scilly: Cornwall or Caribbean.

To think, perhaps to dream, of a quiet place, a place of great beauty, washed by azure seas, golden beaches, dramatic cliff;  to wander perhaps across lonely moors and breath-taking coastal vistas. A possibility to find peace and come back to an inner serenity. Of course that place is within us, but sometimes we have to leave our lives for a while and find a place to for this soul of ours to take refuge, to lose the grip of the frantic activity of a mind confused with worries, anxieties and a lack of ease. The demands of life today have the ability to overwhelm our mind and our senses and we get lost for a time. We all need the space to clear all this bombardment to be able to see clearly once again. Our Unique History Of St Michaels Mount

St Michaels Mount

Originally the Mount was known as the ‘Grey Rock in the Wood’ until sea levels rose, perhaps as early as 2000 BC, when the Mount became a tidal island accessed by foot only at low tide, as it is, along with Mont St Michel in the present day. This rise in sea level is also believed to be when the ancient land of Lyonesse was overwhelmed, leaving us only with the beautiful and magical Scilly Isles. Interestingly Guinevere, the legendary bride of King Arthur was known as the Princess of Lyonesse and perhaps resided on St Michael’s Mount when it was believed to be an ancient citadel. Lee Groves new head chef at the Mount Haven Hotel.

We are delighted to announce that our team of talented young chefs is now being led by the celebrated Head Chef, Lee Groves.

chef at the Mount Haven hotel

Lee Groves at the Mount Haven

Lee brings to the mix his own unique style and talent acquired and honed by 23 years in the industry.  Most recently at Seagrass in St Ives where he was awarded Best Head Chef 2012 by Cornwall Life magazine, semi-finalist South West Chef of the year and finalist Best Chef – Food magazine 2012. Well-remembered for his semi-finalist appearance on Masterchef the Professionals in 2012 Lee has since spent his time perfecting his own brand and style of cooking.

Lee’s arrival has enthused the team and he is pushing forward the already fantastic food offering at Restaurant Mount Haven. Lee loves to take well-established dishes and give them a new life, for example cooking fish with a blow-torch rather than pan-frying and adding different textures to make the food more tantalising on the palate.

As we spent the winter redesigning the restaurant, Lee’s arrival is perfect to launch the new, softer and more romantic space in which to enjoy the great food. Reinforcing our place in the culinary landscape of Marazion and the Penzance area. Read a recent fantastic review in The Cornishman.

We are showcasing an exhibition of photographs of Newlyn by Baxter Bradford in the restaurant. As the fish is delivered fresh from the port of Newlyn daily it perfectly complements what’s on your plate!

Mount Haven’s focus moving forward to is enhance even further our reputation for quality and personal, relaxed  service. With Lee on board to drive this through Mount Haven will open for Xmas and the New Year in 2013. No doubt Lee will be developing some novel and mouth-watering twists on the traditional Xmas fayre to make Christmas at Mount Haven Hotel one to remember.

Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens: Penzance’s major new attraction.

We visited Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens in Oct 2012 to see this major new attraction in West Cornwall. Located close to Penzance in a beautiful sheltered valley, the woods, stream and dramatic views towards St Michael’s Mount provide a perfect setting for large scale exotic and sub-tropical planting. It stands apart from many famous gardens in Cornwall with the way it has incorporated high quality contemporary art installations from world renowned sculptors like James Turrell and Kishio Sugo.

History of the gardens

Before 1290 the land at Tremenheere was owned by the monks of nearby St Michaels’ Mount. William De Tremenheere bought the land at that time and stayed in the family for 600 years. Seymour, the last Tremenheere, is credited with planting the beech, oak, sweet chestnut and holly throughout the woods in or around 1830. He essentially did the early landscaping work and created a fine cut stone entrance bridge with his initials and the date 1849.

The garden covers 20 acres and is situated a mile east of Penzance along a stretch of land known as the Golden Mile. As well as the fortunate combination of good soil, mild microclimate and shelter, the land benefits from wonderful mature tree woodland and outstanding sea views across Mounts Bay to St Michaels Mount.

Planting in the garden

The very favoured micro-climate of kindly winter temperatures and shelter from the wind allow all manner of exotic and half -hardy plants to flourish. The planting schemes are appropriate to the varying individual habitats like the Exotic woodland with Dicksonia, Enstetes and containing an amazing collection of bamboo.

The Arid zone favours sculptural species such as Aqave, Cacti and Puya alpestris. The swampy bog areas created where a free flowing stream runs through to the bottom of the valley featuring Blechnum megellanicum.

Facilities at Tremenheere

A bright and modern building close to the large car park houses a shop selling local crafts and plants and the stylish Lime Café which serves fabulous freshly prepared homemade meals, snacks and drinks throughout the day.

Between 2-4 pm a fantastic English afternoon tea with a selection of tasty sandwiches and mini sweet treats is served on a cake stand with a proper pot of tea or coffee.

Art at Tremenheere Sculpture Park

Dramatic landscape and planting provide the backdrop to contemplative but inspirational artworks. Internationally renowned artists such as James Turrell and David Nash have interacted with the landscape to create site  permanent works which compliment the setting.

Great feedback from a satisfied client of the Healing Room!

We recently got a great testimonial for our Time to Transform getaways from Hip and Healthy the online magazine that promotes health and happiness and where to find!

Healing Room Penzance

A back complaint caused by a surfing accident on Bondi Beach meant our client had suffered pain and discomfort for over year with no success in resolving it. Many physio session, doctors appointments and massages, but the pain continued.

A consultation with Sam to assess the problem led to a diagnosis with treatments prescribed to target the key trigger points that need blood to circulate, delivering oxygen and nutrients to heal the problem areas. Relief was immediate and her back felt lighter and more at ease. The trip home from Penzance on the train was much easier than on the way down!

Time to Transform packages are offered in the Healing Room and unlike those found in any other spa hotel in Cornwall.  A unique location over looking St Michael’s Mount in Marazion and a team of therapists with many years of experience to find the most suitable treatments for you is an unbeatable combination.
